What Amendment 4 changed, for your 18th Edition exam.
Five changes from Amendment 4 that electriQual's revision cards now teach. Each one has a short explanation and a practice question with the answer.

An FI no longer makes an EICR unsatisfactory
FI means further investigation is advised. It is only used where the agreed extent and limitations stopped you checking something properly. An FI does not make a report unsatisfactory. Before Amendment 4 it did.
- C1 or C2A C1 or a C2 makes the installation unsatisfactory.
- C3 or FIA C3 or an FI does not. They are recorded, and the report can still be satisfactory.
-
Practice question, from "EICR code FI"
An EICR has one FI and no C1 or C2. What does that mean for the overall outcome?
- AThe report has to be unsatisfactory
- BThe report cannot be issued until the FI is cleared
- CThe report can still be satisfactory
- DThe report is satisfactory only if the client agrees
Show the answer
C. The report can still be satisfactoryAn FI does not make a report unsatisfactory. Only a C1 or a C2 does that.
Isolation devices are named by what they can do on load
Amendment 4 names isolation devices by whether they can be opened with load current flowing. The word isolator on its own does not tell you.
- Disconnector, off load only and opened after the load is switched off.
- Switch-disconnector, isolates and can be opened safely while load current is flowing.
- Isolating switch, the household type for fans and showers to BS EN 60669-2-4.
-
Practice question, from "Disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and isolating switches"
Which device can isolate a circuit while it is still carrying load current?
- AA switch-disconnector
- BA disconnector
- CA semiconductor switch
- DA dimmer switch
Show the answer
A. A switch-disconnectorA switch-disconnector isolates and can be opened safely while load current is flowing. A disconnector is off load only.
Energy efficiency moved into Part 8, as Chapter 81
Part 8 is called Functional Requirements. It deals with how an installation uses energy and how it works alongside the grid.
Part 8 is where energy efficiency and prosumers' installations live. Before Amendment 4, energy efficiency was in Appendix 17.
-
Practice question, from "Part 8, Functional Requirements"
Under Amendment 4, where in BS 7671 is energy efficiency covered?
- AAppendix 17
- BChapter 82, in Part 8
- CPart 6
- DChapter 81, in Part 8
Show the answer
D. Chapter 81, in Part 8Amendment 4 added Chapter 81, energy efficiency, to Part 8. Before that, energy efficiency was in Appendix 17, which Amendment 4 removed.
Public outdoor lighting needs a 30mA RCD
A 30mA RCD is not automatic for everything outside the building. It is required wherever one of these rules applies to the circuit.
- Public outdoor lighting, lighting the public can reach, made clear by Amendment 4
- Exceptions for public lighting, SELV supplies, or lighting out of reach or locked in an IK08 enclosure
-
Practice question, from "Outdoor circuits"
Outdoor lighting the public can reach is supplied by SELV. Does it need a 30mA RCD?
- AYes, all public outdoor lighting needs one
- BNo, a SELV supply is an exception
- CYes, because it is outdoors
- DOnly if the luminaires are Class I
Show the answer
B. No, a SELV supply is an exceptionAmendment 4 makes clear that outdoor lighting the public can reach needs a 30mA RCD. It does not if it is supplied by SELV, or is out of reach or locked in an IK08 enclosure.
PNB earthing is new in BS 7671
PNB appears in BS 7671 for the first time with Amendment 4.
PNB is a version of TN-C-S. The neutral is earthed at one single point, at or near the installation, instead of at lots of points along the network.
Usually one consumer, or a few, fed from their own transformer.
-
Practice question, from "The loop in TN-C-S (PNB)"
Which earthing system is PNB a version of?
- ATT
- BTN-S
- CTN-C-S
- DIT
Show the answer
C. TN-C-SPNB is a version of TN-C-S.
The FI, isolation, Part 8 and outdoor circuits cards come with a pass. PNB is in Earth fault loop paths, one of the five free modules.

Is there an exam for Amendment 4?
Not a separate one. Amendment 4 is examined in the City & Guilds 2382-26, the 18th Edition exam on BS 7671:2018 with Amendment 4. From 16 October 2026 it is the only version that can be sat.
Can I still sit the 2382-22?
No. The last 2382-22 tests were on 15 October 2026. From 16 October 2026 only the 2382-26, based on BS 7671 with Amendment 4, can be sat.
What is the 2382-26 exam like?
60 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, taken online. It is open book with BS 7671 and Amendment 4, and the pass mark is about 60%.
Know what changed before the 2382-26.
Five full modules are free. See if it suits how you revise.
