Try 8 AM2 questions now

Real questions from electriQual, on the testing order, safe isolation and what to do when a reading looks wrong. Pick your answer, then open it to check.

  1. from "Why dead tests come first"

A dead test fails halfway through. What do you do?

    1. ANote it and finish the other tests first
    2. BStop, fix it, then retest before carrying on
    3. CSwitch on and check it live
    4. DRecord it as a limitation
    Show the answer
    B. Stop, fix it, then retest before carrying on

If a dead test fails, you stop and fix it. You do not carry on to the next one.

  2. from "Why continuity is first"

Why does continuity of protective conductors come before everything else?

    1. ALater tests depend on the earthing being sound
    2. BIt is the quickest test
    3. CIt needs the least kit
    4. DIt is the only test you can do dead
    Show the answer
    A. Later tests depend on the earthing being sound

Continuity goes first because everything after it depends on the earthing being sound.

  3. from "Why insulation resistance comes before switching on"

What do you do with electronic gear before an IR test?

    1. ALeave it connected but switched off
    2. BTurn the test voltage down and leave it in
    3. CDisconnect it before applying the test voltage
    4. DTest it live afterwards
    Show the answer
    C. Disconnect it before applying the test voltage

Anything that could be damaged gets disconnected before the test voltage goes on.

  4. from "Picking the right meter, function and range"

When do you prove a voltage indicator during safe isolation?

    1. ABefore only
    2. BAfter only
    3. COnce at the start of the day
    4. DBefore you use it and again after
    Show the answer
    D. Before you use it and again after

Prove the meter before and after, if you are relying on it for isolation.

  5. from "Things that distort a reading"

You forgot to null your leads before testing R1+R2 on a radial. With the probe tips touching, the leads read 0.18 Ω. What figure goes on the schedule for the circuit?

R1+R2 on a radial, leads not nulled
    MeasurementReading (Ω)
    Leads, tips touching0.18
    Circuit R1+R20.51
    1. A0.51 Ω
    2. B0.33 Ω
    3. C0.69 Ω
    4. D0.18 Ω
    Show the answer
    B. 0.33 Ω

Lead resistance adds to every reading if the leads were not nulled, so take it off. 0.51 minus 0.18 is 0.33 Ω.

  6. from "When a test fails"

CPC continuity has been tested on three circuits, and insulation resistance is next. What do you do now?

    CPC continuity so far
    CircuitReading (Ω)
    10.53
    20.29
    3Over range

Over range on circuit 3: its CPC is broken somewhere.

    1. AStop, find and fix the break, then repeat the continuity test
    2. BCarry on with insulation resistance, then come back to it
    3. CNote the break and finish the dead tests first
    4. DSwitch on and check circuit 3 while it is live
    Show the answer
    A. Stop, find and fix the break, then repeat the continuity test

A failed test is not written down and moved past. Stop and find the fault, put it right, then repeat the test that failed before carrying on. Insulation resistance would only give rubbish readings on a circuit with a broken CPC, and switching on proves nothing if a fault is already there.

  7. from "Checks between calibrations"

Why is a voltage indicator proved again after it has shown a circuit to be dead?

    1. AThat the circuit has stayed isolated throughout the work
    2. BThat the instrument is within its calibration period
    3. CThat the proving unit itself is working correctly
    4. DThat the instrument did not fail between the two checks
    Show the answer
    D. That the instrument did not fail between the two checks

Proving either side of an isolation shows the tester did not fail during it.

  8. from "The loop in a TT system"

Why do you rely on an RCD for fault protection on TT?

    1. ABreakers are not allowed on TT
    2. BThe fault current is too high for a breaker
    3. CHigh loop impedance limits the fault current too much
    4. DThe neutral is not earthed
    Show the answer
    C. High loop impedance limits the fault current too much

The path is not metal, so loop impedance is high. Fault current is limited, so you rely on an RCD for fault protection.

The safe isolation procedure

Safe isolation is assessed on the AM2 day itself, and it's tagged to the inspection and testing exams too. This is the diagram from the electriQual portal, exactly as learners see it.

  1. Six steps, in orderEach step is numbered, so you can rehearse the sequence, not just the parts.
  2. Built for revisingThe pink line runs through the steps in order, and the note under the steps says why you prove the AVI twice.
  3. One of 16 AM2 diagramsWith a pass you get every diagram tagged to the AM2, alongside the cards they belong to.

Is this the official NET knowledge test?

No. electriQual is independent revision. Its AM2 mocks copy the number of questions and the time limit NET publishes, but every question is written by electriQual from its own revision cards.

Does a pass pay for my AM2?

No. A pass covers electriQual revision only. Your AM2 booking and fees are arranged with NET or your assessment centre.

Which versions of the AM2 does it cover?

There is a mock timed like the AM2 and AM2S knowledge test (30 questions in 1 hour) and one timed like the AM2S v1 (45 questions in 1 hour 30). If you are sitting the AM2E, check your timings with your centre.

Can I take books into the knowledge test?

On the day, you only get the books the centre gives you. When you practise on electriQual, use your own copies.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. Make a free account and five full modules are yours to keep, with no card details. Two of them, Why the test order works and Earth fault loop paths, are tagged to the AM2.
