Try 8 2392-10 practice questions

Real questions from electriQual on test instruments, readings, the test sequence, a resistance calculation, earthing and equipment classes. Pick your answer, then open it to check.

  1. from "The instrument for each test"

Which instrument measures the continuity of protective conductors?

    1. AAn insulation resistance tester
    2. BA low-resistance ohmmeter
    3. CA loop impedance tester
    4. DAn RCD tester
    Show the answer
    B. A low-resistance ohmmeter

Continuity is measured with a low-resistance ohmmeter.

  2. from "Picking the right meter, function and range"

Why do you null the leads before a continuity test?

    1. AThe meter will not switch on
    2. BThe reading comes out too low
    3. CIt damages the meter
    4. DThe lead resistance gets added to your reading
    Show the answer
    D. The lead resistance gets added to your reading

Null the leads out when the reading is going to be small. Lead resistance adds to every reading, as the Things that distort a reading card says.

  3. from "Things that distort a reading"

Why is a parallel earth path a problem during testing?

    1. AIt hides a fault by lowering the reading
    2. BIt raises the reading and fails good circuits
    3. CIt trips the RCD
    4. DIt damages the instrument
    Show the answer
    A. It hides a fault by lowering the reading

Parallel earth paths take some of the test current and pull the reading down.

  4. from "Why insulation resistance comes before switching on"

Why is polarity checked dead and then again live?

    1. AIt is just a double check
    2. BThe dead check is optional if you do the live one
    3. CIt proves the incoming supply is connected how you assumed
    4. DIt checks the insulation
    Show the answer
    C. It proves the incoming supply is connected how you assumed

Dead polarity proves your wiring. Live polarity proves the supply is connected how you assumed.

  5. from "When a test fails"

Why are earlier tests repeated after a fault is found and corrected?

    1. AThe instrument may have drifted during the work
    2. BThe sequence must always be completed in one visit
    3. CTheir results may have been influenced by the fault
    4. DThe earlier results are invalid once the installation is altered
    Show the answer
    C. Their results may have been influenced by the fault

The same fault may have quietly distorted the results before it.

  6. from "What affects resistance"

10 m of 1.5 mm² conductor reads 0.13 Ω. What would 20 m of 2.5 mm² conductor of the same material read?

    Same material, two conductors
    ConductorReading (Ω)
    10 m of 1.5 mm²0.13
    20 m of 2.5 mm²?
    1. A0.16 Ω
    2. B0.43 Ω
    3. C0.26 Ω
    4. D0.08 Ω
    Show the answer
    A. 0.16 Ω

Resistance goes up with length and down with cross-sectional area. Twice the length doubles it, and the bigger area brings it back down.

    Working

    1. Twice the length doubles the resistance: 0.13 × 2 = 0.26 Ω
    2. The area goes from 1.5 to 2.5 mm², so multiply by 1.5 and divide by 2.5
    3. 0.26 × 1.5 ÷ 2.5 = 0.156, about 0.16 Ω
  7. from "The loop in TN-C-S (PME)"

Where do neutral and earth split in a TN-C-S installation?

    1. AAt the transformer only
    2. BAt each final circuit
    3. CThey never split
    4. DAt the origin of the installation
    Show the answer
    D. At the origin of the installation

Neutral and earth split at your origin and stay split after that.

  8. from "Class II equipment"

Double insulation is made up of which two things?

    1. ABasic insulation plus a CPC
    2. BBasic insulation plus supplementary insulation
    3. CTwo layers of basic insulation
    4. DSupplementary insulation plus an RCD
    Show the answer
    B. Basic insulation plus supplementary insulation

Double insulation means basic insulation plus supplementary insulation, for example plastic plus air.

The earth fault loop in TN-C-S (PME)

In TN-C-S the supplier combines neutral and earth into one conductor. On a PME network that combined conductor is earthed at several points along the way. This is the diagram from the electriQual portal, exactly as learners see it, and it's in a free module.

  1. One combined conductorThe supply uses one combined conductor, called the PEN (protective earth and neutral).

How many questions are in the 2392-10 exam, and how long do you get?

50 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes (100 minutes), taken online. About three quarters of them, 36 of the 50, are on testing; 8 are on preparation and 6 on inspection.

Is the 2392-10 exam open book?

No. The multiple-choice test is closed book, so electriQual's mock asks you to put your books away. The practical assessment is different: City & Guilds allows BS 7671, the On-Site Guide and Guidance Note 3 in it.

What is the 2392-10 pass mark?

City & Guilds doesn't publish one. The multiple-choice test is marked pass or fail.

Can I use a calculator in the 2392-10 exam?

Yes. City & Guilds' list of permitted reference materials allows a non-programmable scientific calculator. Check with your centre before the day.

Is there a practical assessment as well?

Yes. The qualification also has a 2-hour practical assessment, arranged by your centre. electriQual's mock covers the multiple-choice test only.

Is the 2392-10 being replaced because of Amendment 4?

No. City & Guilds updated the 2392-10 qualification handbook in April 2026 to reflect the BS 7671 amendment, and the qualification stays open for registrations until 31 December 2027.
